As Holi celebrations approach, Lucknow and other parts of Uttar Pradesh are witnessing unique and expensive festive traditions. From silver water guns to golden sweets, this year’s Holi preparations are nothing short of extraordinary.
Silver pichkaris for weddings
A jewelry shop in Lucknow sells special silver Pichkaris (water guns) and small buckets, priced as high as Rs 1 lakh. These beautifully crafted items are part of an old wedding tradition.
Jeweller Adesh Kumar Jain explained, “This is an old tradition in which this ‘Pichkari’ is gifted among a newly married couple’s family, where the bride’s family gifts it to the groom’s family as a pledge… Its price ranges from about Rs 8000 to Rs 1 lakh.”
The tradition of gifting silver Pichkaris has been around for generations. In some families, it symbolises a gesture of goodwill between the bride’s and groom’s families. The price of these decorative water guns ranges from Rs 8,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
Jain shared why this year’s Pichkaris are even more special: “This year was special because, for the first time, intricate carvings, meenakari work, and stone inlays were introduced, which have been highly appreciated.”
Sales have been impressive. “The response has been great. So far, at least 1,000 Pichkaris have been sold in Lucknow. Since we run a wholesale business, many shopkeepers have purchased from us to sell to their customers. I believe that in the coming years, this wedding Pichkari tradition will become even more popular,” Jain added.
Many people are drawn to these unique and beautifully crafted Pichkaris, making them a sought-after item this Holi season.
Golden gujiya: A luxury sweet
Meanwhile, a sweet shop in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, has introduced a luxurious twist to the traditional Holi dessert — the ‘Golden Gujiya.’
This exclusive sweet is priced at Rs 50,000 per kilogram and Rs 1,300 per piece. Shop manager Shivakant Chaturvedi explained why it’s so expensive: “Our ‘Golden Gujiya’ has a layering of 24-carat gold. The stuffing has special dry fruits. 24-carat gold and silver are also eaten. This ‘gujiya’ costs Rs 50,000 per kg and Rs 1300 per piece.”
Traditional Gujiyas are sweet dumplings filled with khoya (reduced milk), nuts, and dried fruits. What makes this version unique is the edible 24-carat gold leaf, giving it a rich golden appearance.
Chaturvedi further explained that the special dry fruit filling, combined with the golden layer, makes it a truly rare and luxurious treat. Though the price is high, many customers are curious to try this one-of-a-kind festive sweet.
