Author and philanthropist Sudha Murty has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by Indian President Droupadi Murmu, announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and congratulated Sudha Murty and praised her for her contribution to diverse fields, terming it “immense and inspiring”.
“I am delighted that the President of India has nominated @SmtSudhaMurtyJi to the Rajya Sabha. Sudha Ji’s contributions to diverse fields including social work, philanthropy and education have been immense and inspiring. Her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to our ‘Nari Shakti’, exemplifying the strength and potential of women in shaping our nation’s destiny. Wishing her a fruitful Parliamentary tenure,” PM Modi wrote on X.
Sudha Murty is an educator, author, philanthropist and the former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. She is a member of the public healthcare initiatives of the Gates Foundation and has also established the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University. In 2006, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award and then in 2023, she was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award.
Sudha Murty is married to Infosys co-founder Narayan Murty and has two children, Akshata and Rohan.
Sudha Murty is well known for her novel, ‘Dollar Bahu’ which was originally authored by her in Kannada and later translated into English. This novel was adapted as a dramatic series by Zee TV in 2001. Another well-known story, ‘Runa’ which was written by her was also adapted as a Marathi film. She has authored multiple short stories and novels which has entertained everyone from kids to the elderly. One of her most well-known works is ‘How I Taught My Grandmother to Read and Other Stories’.
